The HR Profession Map is the biggest change in the profession for a long time, Philippa Lamb explains.
In this podcast you will hear what the map is, how to use it and listen to some employers who are using it to assess and drive up HR capability in their organisations.
Vanessa Robinson has been running the research to develop the map. Listen to her describe the changes we found in the development of the profession, which drove the direction of the map. Vanessa outlines the wide areas of specialisation available which makes human resources a challenging and influential career.
Stephanie Bird explains what the map is and how it works. It defines the areas of the profession and what you need to know and do to progress. Then the map looks at the eight key behaviours, broken into three clusters. Stephanie explains these briefly but clearly. She then goes on to describe how our new profession map can be used throughout the profession to help individual members assess and achieve their career potential.
The map can also be used across the organisation. Listen to Siobhan Sheridan describe how she is using the map at the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to assess her team and herself even though she has been in the profession for a while.
Vanessa explains that the map recognises that people come to HR from different disciplines and also that they go on to careers that are not directly linked to the profession, but which can use much of the business and leadership experience gained in their HR roles.
Tanith Dodge from Marks and Spencer, takes up the story of flexible careers and moving around the business. Listen to her career path and the changes she has noticed in the HR function. Philippa goes back to Stephanie, who explains how the ‘bands’ set out in the Profession Map work. They can be used to benchmark where you are and the activities and knowledge needed for each. Listen to Stephanie describe where she think she fits in to the map herself.
Siobhan and Tanith agree with Vanessa that HR is a diverse profession which provides huge and challenging opportunities for graduates from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
