Matthew Brearley

Matthew Brearley was appointed UK HR Director at Vodafone in 2006, a role that enabled him to apply his wealth of commercial experience in driving business performance through coherent and innovative people strategies.

Matthew’s depth of knowledge in the fields of employee engagement and HR transformation, allows him to drive a proactive and business-focused HR service at Vodafone which is aligned to its UK and global strategy. He has continued to lead an Employee Experience Strategy; embedding principles of employee engagement into core business activities, and as a result, achieved Sunday Times ‘Best Companies to Work For’ recognition in 2006.

Matthew was formerly Vodafone UK’s lead HR Business Partner responsible for transition. One of his many achievements in this role was the successful integration of 2000 individuals following Vodafone’s acquisition of Singlepoint Telecoms in 2005.

After studying engineering at The University of Bath and graduating with first class honours, his first working role was with the world’s largest oil company Exxon Mobil Corporation. Joining as a graduate trainee, in six years Matthew gained operational experience in roles ranging from project manager to supply co-ordination manager.

Matthew worked for 2 years as an Internal Change Consultant for Associated British Foods, before joining retail giant B&Q Plc in 1995 as HR consultant, progressing to Director of Retail HR within a seven year timeframe. In 2002, he embarked on a new challenge as Director of HR at leading UK retailer, Marks & Spencer Plc. He was an integral member of the Marks & Spencer leadership team through a period of much publicised business recovery and growth strategy.
His role involved overseeing the People Strategy and transformation of HR for a workforce of 57,000 employees across 320 stores.

With a strong desire to keep learning, he is currently applying his skills and experience to drive performance at Vodafone.
