HR big hitters from public and private sector to join CIPD team – New President and Vice President nominations unveiled

16 November 2009

The CIPD today unveils three HR big hitters who have agreed to give their time to supporting the Institute’s work to lead thought and build capability in the HR profession, taking on the role of President-elect and two Vice President roles. All three are non-executive roles.

• Gill Rider, Head of the Civil Service Capability Group and Head of Profession for Civil Service HR, is the CIPD’s nomination for its next President.

• Alex Wilson, Group HR Director for BT, is the CIPD’s nomination for its next Vice President, Employee Relations.

• Stephen Dando, Chief Human Resources Officer for Thomson Reuters, is the CIPD’s nomination for its next Vice President, International.

The new nominees join a strong and high calibre team of Vice Presidents already contributing their time in support of the CIPD’s work (see Notes to Editors for the full list), and replace the retiring Vice Presidents Siobhan Cummins (International) and Tony McCarthy (Employee Relations).

Jackie Orme, CIPD Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that these three leaders of the profession have agreed to offer their time in support of our work to transform the profession. We’re on a journey to build the capacity and capability necessary for HR to contribute fully to sustainable organisational performance across the public and private sectors, in the UK and on a global level. Our efforts will be strengthened with these high calibre people on the team. Their decision to sign up is a boost to our work, and demonstrates the wealth of talent from within the profession that the CIPD is able to call upon.”

Vicky Wright, CIPD President, who will be succeeded by Gill Rider in December 2010, said: “Jackie Orme is leading a programme of substantial change at the CIPD, designed to build a profession equipped with the skills and capabilities needed to deliver sustainable organisational performance, not just today, but into the future. It is a tribute to her leadership and to the contribution the CIPD makes to the profession that these three exceptional candidates are willing to join the team. I am particularly delighted to welcome Gill Rider as my successor as President. She brings substantial experience gained in both the public and private sectors, and also has valuable experience of leading a global HR function.”

Gill Rider said: “The CIPD plays a vital leadership role for the profession. I’m excited by the changes underway to ensure the Institute is building the capabilities the profession needs to thrive today and in the future, and I’m looking forward to contributing to this work as President.”

Alex Wilson said: “The CIPD has unique scope at the head of the profession to lead thought, champion best practice and promote the profession. I’m a long-standing supporter of the CIPD, and I’m delighted to accept Jackie’s offer of the opportunity to give something back by taking on this role.”

Stephen Dando said: “The CIPD has correctly identified the increasingly international nature of the roles of many of its existing members. In accepting this role, I’m looking to help ensure the CIPD is delivering the international perspective members expect in its thinking and guidance, and also to contributing to the CIPD’s efforts to build its profile and reach on a more global stage.”
