Two CIPD conferences in May: on the changing role of the line manager and the HR function

The role of line managers is becoming increasingly important in influencing employee strategies in the workplace. The importance of line managers in the delivery of effective people management will be the focus of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) conference, HR and the Role of the Line Manager, on 1 May, Victoria Park Plaza, London.

Speakers at the conference include:
• Marcelo Borges, Learning and Development Manager, Nandos
• Geraldine Granger, Head of Learning and Development, John Lewis
• DCI Jackie Keddy, Lead Consultant Coaching and Action Learning, Leadership Academy, Metropolitan Police Service

The day will conclude with a debate on the value of line managers to the future of HR, their role in supporting the ‘well-being agenda’ and considering them as strategic business partners.

Victoria Winkler, learning and development adviser at the CIPD says: “One major obstacle preventing progress in creating high performing organisations rests with the balance between what are and should be HR or line management responsibilities. Increasing line manager involvement in learning and development is one important part of the changing relations between line managers and HR management.”

The Changing Face of the HR Function

According to CIPD research 53% of organisations have restructured their HR function in the past year. Problems they’ve encountered have ranged from limited resources or inadequate technology to trouble redefining job roles.

Vanessa Robinson, CIPD Organisation and Resourcing adviser says: “Structural change has been driven largely by a desire to make HR a more strategic contributor to business success. Today’s HR departments are often judged on their effectiveness in contributing to business outcomes, as well as improving efficiency and reducing costs.”

On 14 May the CIPD will also examine ‘The Changing Face of the HR Function’, in a second conference at Jury’s Great Russell Street, London. Featuring the latest CIPD research as well as case studies from organisations who have undergone a successful restructure, the conference is relevant to all of those working in HR strategy or organisational development.
