Biography

Martyn Sloman was appointed to his current position of Adviser, Learning, Training and Development at CIPD in January 2001. He has responsibility for research into the role and contribution of learning and training in organisations, for e-learning and for the links between people management and technology.

As author, lecturer and conference speaker he has made a significant contribution the development of modern human resource concepts and practice, including a number of important books. His most recent was The Changing World of the Trainer, (Butterworth Heinemann) which was published in April 2007. He also released, Training in the Age of the Learner, in September 2003. It considers the implications of the shift from training as an intervention to learning as an activity.

Prior to joining the CIPD Martyn worked in the private and public sectors and as a consultant. He spent his early career as an economist and business strategist and taught at a Management College before joining the management consultancy arm of the accountants Deloitte Haskins and Sells. From 1997-2000 he worked as Director of Management Education and Training for Ernst & Young.

Martyn is also a Visiting Professor at Caledonian Business School, Glasgow Caledonian University, a Visiting Professor at Kingston Business School, Kingston University and a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Management and Organizational Psychology Birkbeck College, University of London.
