What is the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development came into being on 1 July 2000. Its predecessor, the Institute of Personnel and Development, was granted chartered status and became the first chartered institute of the new millennium. The CIPD has more than 127,500 members and is the professional body for all those specialising in the management and development of people.

How the CIPD can help you?

The CIPD's external affairs and media team can help you with just about any enquiry to do with workplace issues. We can assist you with interviews for both radio and television, and comment for the print media with one of our subject experts.

The CIPD offers a distinctive voice in any commentary on the labour market given that it is a non-partisan body whose views are based on sound evidence and practical research rather than following any political or workplace ideologies.

Our knowledge, expertise, leading edge research and wide range of facts and figures can help you. We cover all aspects of working life, from recruitment to employment law and worklife balance to productivity.

As well as managing the CIPD's media relations the external affairs team is responsible, along with other colleagues, for developing relationships with a wide array of opinion formers both within Government and elsewhere.

What does CIPD do?

The CIPD is committed to being the leading, best-practice professional institute in the UK and Ireland. It exists to help its members improve the performance of their organisations and through them help increase the productivity levels of the whole economy. Its central message is that people mean business.

There is now strong evidence that progressive people management and development policies are the key to sustainable success in the emerging service-sector oriented knowledge economy.

The CIPD also advises Government and businesses at UK and European level on employment policies and plays a key role in developing both national and European-level employment strategies.
The CIPD's members are drawn from every sector of the UK economy, both public and private - with many acting in key strategic roles within their organisations. The CIPD aims through its research, publishing and conferences to provide a better understanding of the key workplace issues for members, opinion formers and the wider public.

The Institute is responsible for the professional qualifications of the personnel profession and also provides a range of leading-edge training courses, workshops and seminars designed for personnel specialists, trainers, line managers and support staff at all levels.

Each year the Institute holds at least eight major conferences and exhibitions, including the largest management conference in Europe - the CIPD's Annual Conference, held in Harrogate during October each year.
