CIPD conference enforces the global business case for responsible and sustainable organisations

  • 13 Dec 2011

Corporate responsibility (CR) is more than just a means to engage and promote the employer brand, it is a driving force for the long-term sustainability of an organisation. The on-going financial crisis has had a huge impact on organisation strategy and has fuelled a drive to remain competitive, grow revenues and develop both customer and employee loyalty. Organisations that seek to thrive in this environment, with the additional concerns of limited resources and changing global challenges, are now making bold decisions ensuring they are accountable for socio-economic and environmental responsibilities, not just financial issues. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Corporate Responsibility for HR Professionals Conference will explore the role of HR in managing effective CR programmes: developing strategy, integrating responsible business practices and engaging employees with the organisation’s values and objectives.

The conference will offer delegates a complete guide to CR. A number of expert case studies from an array of international organisations such as KPMG, BT, IBM UK and Aviva, will share their insight and learning from how they have embedded CR into the core values and culture of their organisations to drive business goals, while engaging employees. Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director, Forum for the Future, will begin the conference with a look into the business case for corporate sustainability, defining and embedding values that support the employer brand.

The afternoon will provide a choice of workshop sessions featuring:
• CSR: Getting started – how to get buy in from others and inspire your colleagues to get involved. Speakers include: Suresh Banarse, Head of People, Yo! Sushi, Louise McCabe, Head of CSR, ASOS, and Jayanti Durai, Head of CSR, Nationwide.
• The Next Steps – embedding corporate responsibility through the organisation, with Marcus Jamieson-Pond, Director at Three Legged Stool and Founder of the Convergence Network.
• Smart CR Reporting – how to decide on what to report and which standards to use in CR reporting, with Dr Colin Morgan, Global Product Manager – Social Responsibility at SGS UK.

Dr Jill Miller, Adviser, CIPD, says: “Corporate responsibility is a global issue; organisations with a strong focus on the future are already well on the way to integrating CR principles into their business. However, there is more work to do and HR is well-placed to steer organisations in the right direction, working alongside business leaders in developing and embedding a focused CR agenda. A key part of this process involves being able to demonstrate the business case and genuine value that their organisation can derive from having an innovative approach to sustainable and responsible business planning. The CIPD will be carrying out research early next year to examine the extent to which CR impacts an organisation and demonstrate the business benefits that can be gained from an effective, integrated approach to CR along with HR’s role in delivering it.

“This conference is a great opportunity for HR and CR professionals to network and share best practice ideas. The organisations we have taking part will provide invaluable advice on the current issues associated with CR.”
