This Work Audit looks at the impact of the jobs recession that begain in 2008, considering its effect on employers, workers and the economy as a whole.
Counting the cost of the jobs recession is based on official statistics and CIPD research evidence. It finds that almost 2.7 million people have been made redundant since the start of the recession - the equivalent of one in ten workers. The pain of job losses is being felt by employers as well as the jobless themselves, with the total cost of redundancies to UK employers thus far is an estimated £28.6 billion.
Without a robust economic recovery, these numbers will simply continue to rise, thus further underlining the need for the Chancellor to set out a workable strategy for growth and jobs in the upcoming Budget.
