Level 7 Advanced qualifications

CIPD Level 7 Advanced qualifications are the most widely-recognised professional qualifications in the field of HR and Development. Set at postgraduate level, they are also the highest level of qualifications we offer. Studying a CIPD level 7 Advanced qualification will help you develop your breadth of knowledge and specialise in your chosen area. The Advanced Diploma will also provide a pathway to Chartered Membership. 

CIPD Advanced Level qualifications enable you to learn how to develop and implement creative and strategic HR solutions that drive organisational performance. You will also be able to develop your understanding of organisations and the external context within which HR operates.

Who is a CIPD Advanced qualification for?

CIPD Advanced qualifications are ideal for those who:
  • are responsible for HR decision making within an organisation at an operational, tactical or more strategic level
  • have responsiblity for the HR function and activities within an organisation, including HR development
  • are working as an independent or employed HRM/HRD consultant, supporting organisations in meeting their goals
  • aspire to become a Chartered member of CIPD.
CIPD Advanced Level Certificate and Diploma qualifications provide you with a professionally recognised qualification and a professional level of membership, Associate (Assoc CIPD).  Plus CIPD Advanced Diplomas also allow you to gain recognition for your HRM or HRD experience through CIPD Chartered membership (Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow).

Qualification options

We offer a flexible range of Advanced qualifications that vary in size, content and length. You’ll gain credits for successfully completed units and the total number achieved will equate to:

  • an Advanced Award (the shortest and bite-size qualification)
  • an Advanced Diploma (medium-scope qualification)
  • an Advanced Certificate (the largest and most extensive qualification).

You can choose to follow either a HR or L&D pathway and have the opportunity to study individual Advanced Level Awards to either start or top up your HR and L&D knowledge.

CIPD Advanced level qualifications are comparable to a Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 7 (or Postgraduate Level).  This is comparable to Level 9 in Ireland, Level 11 in Scotland and the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) Level 7.

Level 7 Advanced Certificate

The CIPD Advanced certificate qualification is mid-scope in size, providing a firm introduction and understanding of HR or L&D in a wider business context. The CIPD offers one Advanced Level certificate qualification:

  • CIPD Level 7 Advanced Certificate in Human Resources

Students are able to gain credits for completed modules.  A Certificate qualification is a total of 60 credits. To achieve a CIPD Level 7 Certificate in Human Resources, you will need to successfully complete four modules* listed in the table below:

A Certificate qualification (60 credits) is a total of 600 study hours of which 300 hours should be private study.  On average it can take 9-12 months to complete, however this will depend on your chosen study centre and your mode of study.

Level 7 Advanced Diplomas

A Diploma qualification is the highest size qualification at this level.  This qualification enables you to develop your skills of HR and L&D through undertaking more modules and through widening your breadth of HR and L&D knowledge further.The CIPD offers two Advanced Level Diploma qualifications:

  • CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management
  • CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Development

Students are able to gain credits for completed modules. A Diploma qualification is a total of 120 credits.

Core units

Both Advanced Diploma qualifications in Human Resource Management and Development share the same four core units (60 credits) that students must take:

A Diploma (120 credits) is a total of 1200 study hours of which 600 should be private study. On average it can take 2-2.5 years to complete, however this will depend on your chosen study centre and your mode of study.

Level 7 Advanced Award

An Award is the smallest size of qualification we offer.  This ultimately gives you the opportunity to study bite size topics and gain knowledge from a range of professional areas enabling you to build a practical qualification that suits your specific professional needs. The CIPD offers one Advanced Level Award qualification:

  • CIPD Level 7 Advanced Award in Human Resources

An Award qualification is made up of one module totalling 15 credits.

These qualifications are comparable to a Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 7 (or Postgraduate Level).  This is comparable to Level 9 in Ireland, Level 11 in Scotland and the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) Level 7.

To achieve a CIPD Level 7 Award in Human Resources, you will need to successfully complete one module listed in the table below:

An Award (15 credits) is a total of 150 study hours of which 75 hours should be private study. On average it can take 3-6 months to complete, however this will depend on your chosen study centre and your mode of study.

Next steps

CIPD qualifications are delivered at CIPD centres in the UK, Ireland and internationally. You can study full- or part-time, in a block format or distance learning. CIPD membership

Once you have decided on your CIPD qualification and have registered with your chosen approved centre, you will join the CIPD as Student member. As well as increasing your professional credibility with employers, CIPD membership will also give you exclusive member-only access to the latest HR and L&D resources, development tools, networking opportunities and discounts. Plus continuing your membership beyond your studies will ensure your progression to achieving professional membership of the CIPD. Successully completing your CIPD qualification means you’ll automatically upgrade to Associate member, which is a professional level of CIPD membership. Becoming a professional member of the CIPD will enhance your career prospects and earning potential. As an Associate professional member you’ll be able to use the letters Assoc CIPD after your name. If you’re studying the Advanced level Diploma in HRM or HRD, and are working in HR or L&D at a managerial or strategic level, you can apply to upgrade to Chartered membership when you qualify.
