Meaning of grades for CIPD units/qualifications

CIPD students who have successfully completed one of our certificate or postgraduate programmes of learning can achieve a pass, merit or distinction at the unit and/or qualification level. The meanings of these grades are summarised below.

Pass (50 – 59%)

This means that the student has met the learning outcomes for a specific unit/qualification. Students with a pass grade will have demonstrated an acceptable level of knowledge in the subject matter and where applicable, demonstrated a satisfactory level of performance in the application of specific skills.

Merit (60 – 69%)

Students with a pass at the merit level will have met the learning outcomes for a specific unit/qualification in a comprehensive manner, both in terms of depth and breadth. They will have demonstrated a sound level of knowledge in the subject matter, drawing on a range of appropriate evidence. Where the unit/qualification requires the development and application of specific skills, students with merit will have demonstrated these with confidence and competence.

Distinction (70% or more)

Students with a mark of distinction will have exceeded the learning outcomes for a specific unit/qualification. They will have demonstrated an impressive level of knowledge and authoritative coverage of the subject matter, drawing on a wide range of sources and evidence. Where the unit/qualification requires the development and application of specific skills, students with a mark of distinction will have demonstrated exemplary practice commensurate with the level of the unit or qualification.
