Age

  • By 2020 nearly a third of the UK workforce will be over 50. CIPD and CMI members were surveyed on attitudes to older workers and how prepared organisations are for coping with an ageing workforce.
  • As the Government launches a consultation on the planned removal of the Default Retirement Age, the CIPD and the DWP, with the support of Acas, have produced guidance for employers on good retirement practices.
  • Young people have been one of the groups hardest hit by the economic downturn. How has this affected the so-called ‘Generation Y’ and what can we do to motivate and provide opportunities for our future workforce?

  • We commissioned Cranfield School of Management and the University of Westminster to review the literature on the impact of generational diversity on people management. The report of this research, Tapping into talent: the age factor and generation issues focuses on the perceived differences between the four generations in the workforce: Veterans, Baby Boomers, and Generations X and Y, the validity of those differences and implications for HR.
  • Our joint publication with Penna Gen Up: How the Four Generations Work was published in Sepember 2008. This looks at the impact of generational diversity and how organisations are benefiting from the skills and motivations of the different generations - veterans, baby boomers, and generations X and Y.
  • We've published two reports looking at the impact of age legislation on recruitment and reward. They profile emerging challenges, explain the background relating to them, outline possible solutions and give examples of employer responses to them so that personnel professionals can make sure their organisations deliver their legal obligations and know what they should be thinking about to create a more age diverse workforce that will support their business needs.

The first report, Age and Recruitment, was produced in conjunction with the CIPD by Cranfield Business School and Beachcroft LLP.

The second, Managing an Ageing Workforce: The role of total reward, examines how total rewards can be managed for an age-diverse workforce. It was produced for CIPD by Dr Emma Parry of Cranfield School of Management.
