Health and employee well-being

  • Our latest survey of employee absence in the UK was published in July 2008.
  • In September 2007 we produced two free publications addressing the issues involved in managing drug and alcohol misuse at work. We reported the findings from a survey which we carried out with People Management magazine examining how managers were dealing with the issues. And we produced a practical guide for people management professionals with advice on dealing with the problems involved.

  • What’s Happening with Well-being at Work? This was published in May 2007, and was the result of action research conducted by the CIPD and Dr Noreen Tehrani. The findings outlined are intended to stimulate debate by examining the nature of well-being, exploring what well-being involves, identifying the impact of well-being on individuals and organisations and illustrating how employers are introducing the concepts of employee well-being into their organisations.
  • We worked with the Health and Safety Executive to develop practical help for HR and line managers to tackle the issue of stress at work. We developed a competency framework based on 19 key management behaviours which the study identified as playing a vital role in preventing, identifying, and tackling stress effectively. We produced practical guidance for managers with three separate leaflets: one setting out the competency framework and two further leaflets which include the framework with additional advice for line managers and HR professionals respectively.
  • In November 2006 we published Cancer and Working: Guidelines for Employers, HR and Line Managers
  • Working with Cancer, published in October 2006, reported on a survey which explored how organisations are handling the challenge of managing individuals who are affected by cancer.
  • We collaborated with the Health and Safety Executive and ACAS to produce a practical tool for managing absence.
  • A guide for HR professionals on managing the return to work of employees after long-term illness was published in November 2005.
