• A survey of employees experiences of training was published in February 2005 as Who learns at work? It looks at the availability of training, who receives the most training opportunities, the preferred training methods and the success and relevance of training.

• In January 2005 we published a guide to basic skills. Basic skills in the workplace: opening doors to learning poses questions to think about why and how improving literacy and numeracy impacts on bottom line productivity.

• A think-piece on e-learning and disabilty was published in January 2005. It is based on interviews with key stakeholders and containing details of examples of current practice in case study organisations to realise the potential of e-learning for disabled people.

• A think-piece on trade union representatives and how they can contribute to learning at work was produced jointly with the TUC in April 2004.

• A shift is taking place in human resource development from training to learning, with a move away from isolated top-down training interventions to encouraging and supporting the learner. To reflect these changes, Martyn Sloman's book, Training in the Age of the Learner, published in September 2003, comments on these changes. • Our project, How do people learn, was conducted on behalf of CIPD by the Cambridge Programme for Industry. It mapped our current approaches to learning, and our knowledge on where, when and how people learn. It covered how new technology impacted on learning, and the learner, and was launched at HRD 2002.
