This paper explains the drivers for the CIPD's research into the evolving nature of HR and the central propositions of this work. Through an applied research programme we will explore these research questions:

• How is HR evolving its strategic focus and associated practice to support the development of sustainable organisation performance?
• How is this impacting the nature and balance of leadership roles HR is performing?
• What new ways of working is this demanding of HR?
