We undertake a wide variety of research into the field of reward.
We run an annual survey of UK reward management. This provides the latest benchmarking data in respect of current and emerging practice. The 2008 survey report was launched at the CIPD Reward Conference in February 2008.
At the Reward Conference we also launched a short free report looking at reward and older workers - Managing an Aging Workforce: The role of total reward.
We also launched a new second edition of our report Flexible Benefits at the Reward Conference 2008. This looks at the issues employers must address when introducing a flex scheme. You can see full details and order the report online in the CIPD Bookstore.
In 2007 we completed a study involving research undertaken in six organisations looking at the role of line managers in reward and in learning and development. The first report from this study Rewarding Work: The vital role of line managers was published in February 2007
The final report from the project, Line Managers in Reward, Learning and Development was published in November 2007. This reported on findings combining the areas of reward and learning and development. The report can be purchased from the CIPD Bookstore.
The CIPD and e-reward hosted an academic-practitioner event in July 2007. Academics in the reward field shared their current research and explored with practitioners the practical implications.
A CIPD executive briefing, Flexible Benefits, was published in February 2004. This looks at the issues employers must address prior to introducing a flex scheme. This is available to purchase online in our bookstore.

The CIPD executive briefing, Employee share plans, was published in February 2006. It gives an overview of how schemes fit into a company and the roles they fulfil. It is available to purchase online.
We commissioned research to examine the role of fair reward in managing a diverse workforce. The report, published in February 2006, will be useful to all practitioners who want to ensure that their pay systems reward employee contribution rather than individual bias.
We worked with the Institute of Customer Service on investigating reward issues in customer service environments. We reported on our findings in July 2005.
We have developed a tool to facilitate the introduction of bonus and incentive plans. Bonus and incentive plans will stage you through a phased process, to ensure you make informed choices.
A practical tool, Managing reward for business performance, offers you the basics in developing a reward strategy.
In 2002 we published an Executive Briefing, Total Reward, written by Paul Thompson of e-reward. This is now out-of-print, but is available for loan to members from the CIPD Library. A summary of the report is also available to view.
Pensions
We have carried out research into pensions in a number of areas:
- In December 2004 we published a guide on how to communicate pensions issues effectively to staff so that they understand the issues and have the knowledge to make informed choices.
