A write-up of a one-day conference, A Showcase of CIPD Diversity Research. The programme explored a range of research, as well as short formal presentations and a series of round-table discussions with subject experts and experienced practitioners.
The starting point for diversity is that everybody is different and unique: everybody has strengths and weaknesses and, through a unique mixture of talent, skills and experience, they can make a valuable and valued contribution. Diversity goes beyond merely a recognition that we're different, it values and celebrates those differences. Organisations then have the responsibility to manage diversity. Diversity is essential to people management and the HR profession has an essential stakeholder interest in making sure individual differences are seen as an asset, not a problem.
Using the CIPD research as a basis, the discussions provide learning opportunities for personnel professionals, diversity specialists and public policy-makers. The purpose is to influence, inform and support organisations as they attempt to make diversity a central focus on managing and developing people and working practices.
