About this download

This guide draws on research to identify the behaviours that will help line managers identify and proactively manage disputes at work . It is designed to help equip line managers with the skills and confidence to intervene at an early stage in disputes at work before they escalate to the point where the formal disciplinary of grievance procedure has to be used.

The guide includes:

  • An Introduction which sets out the context
  • Practical guidance on the key issues in managing conflict. The guidance is supported by short case studies. Includes a competency framework for line managers and a self-assessment questionnaire
  • Guidance to  the people management skills needed by line managers so they don’t become part of the problem rather than the solution to workplace conflict. Includes a self-assessment questionnaire and a table which differentiates between behaviours associated with strong management and those associated with bullying.
