This report summarises the results from the first phase of a major research study designed to explore how HRM can contribute to improved performance in the NHS. The work is sponsored by CIPD in partnership with the Department of Health and Healthcare People Management Association.

The report provides an overview of:

  • empirical literature on the HR-performance relationship
  • HRM in the NHS
It concludes with an outline of the implications of this research for the NHS, HRM and the local HR function in the NHS.
