Assertiveness workout

Overview

Last Published  01 August 2012

This tool consists of a series of brief role-play exercises. They are fun to do and even people who prefer to avoid role-plays get into the spirit and join in (which means they are more likely to join in when you do more serious role-plays). Despite the fun, they have a serious side in that they provide a challenge for the assertive role-players, show whether they tend to 'default' to submissive or aggressive behaviour, and highlight the grey areas between aggressive, submissive and assertive behaviours. Finally, as the role-plays work best in small groups, they create a lot of energy.

The tool is a very participative exercise involving a lot of group work.

Tool aim
  • To help participants to better understand and develop assertive behaviour through practice role-plays.
