Handling manipulation

Our assertiveness can be tested in many situations but none more so than when confronted with someone using manipulative tactics to get what they want. The primitive part of our brain perceives manipulation as 'threat' and triggers our fight-or-flight response, which, in turn, results in aggressive or submissive behaviour from us. When learning to be assertive it is too easy to assume that being assertive simply means feeling okay enough to say 'no' or to give as good as you get. This rarely resolves a situation and can make it worse.

In this tool, therefore, after an introductory discussion, participants will have an opportunity to practise the relevant assertive techniques as valuable responses to manipulative situations, including those in which they wish to say 'no'.
