There are two points about classroom-acquired assertiveness skills that make them difficult to implement in practice. First, assertiveness is a 'soft' skill and implementing soft skills is always tricky. Second, assertive behaviour has to be supported by assertive thinking and thinking is always difficult to change. Consequently, this tool is designed to help participants overcome the big implementation problem - habit.
This tool explains the implementation problem and provides tried and tested solutions to it. The tool is divided into three parts: a structured discussion to get participants thinking your way; a description of several ideas that will help their implementation; and, finally, small group work to plan implementation.
