Active listening skills in interviews

Last Modified  28 July 2016

Active listening is a method used to listen and respond to others in a structured and deliberate way. It requires the interviewer to understand and actively evaluate what they've heard.

The tool uses handouts and short exercises to help participants to understand the idea of active listening and how to use it effectively in interview situations. The exercises in the tool are participative, and work best in small groups.

Tool aims
  • To introduce participants to the concept of active listening.
  • To gain awareness of the importance of how things are said and the different messages that can be conveyed.
  • To help participants to actively listen in a typical interview.
