Most trainers at some time will be asked to give a report on how individual attendees performed on a course. This is tricky - you fall between two stools: on the one hand you have a duty to the course sponsor (usually a manager of the HR department) to report on how attendees did, and on the other hand, you have a duty to the attendees themselves who are, after all, grown up and have come a long way from the days when they got an end-of-term report at school. Writing secret critiques (no matter how fair and positive they are) make the trainer seem like a fifth columnist and might cause the attendees to lose trust in you. 

This activity allows the attendees to critique themselves negatively, something all of us find only too easy to do and also to critique themselves positively - something all of us often find very hard to do. Because the result will be seen by both the attendee and whoever else it concerns (including yourself), it is seen to be fair and honest.
