An overview of the legal framework of absence management

Last Published  01 August 2012

This tool provides an overview of the legal framework that is relevant to effective absence management. Managing absence is underpinned by several pieces of legislation in terms of policy and practices, so it is important that managers have an awareness of the key issues. It is likely that managers will have day-to-day responsibility, as opposed to a strategic role, in managing absence, with someone else in the organisation able to provide specific legal advice. However, it is important that they understand that managing absence can be covered by several different types of legislation. You must make it clear to the learners that this workshop is not legally centred, but that they need to at least have an awareness of how their actions could be legally interpreted.

Tool aim
  • To provide a very brief overview of some of the key legislation in relation to managing absence.
