Building rapport - language

Last Published  01 August 2012

Coaching is a verbal process, and the way in which we use words impacts our ability to understand another's perspective and to build rapport. The types of language used can tell us something about the coachee's thinking style and preferences, and these can help us work with them in a more effective way.

(Note: This Tool is best used after the Tool Building rapport - matching and pacing[cross ref], as it builds on these rapport skills.)

Tool aims
  • To help participants recognise that the way we use words reflects our thinking style and enables them to practise using language to build rapport.
