Using the COACH model

Last Published  01 August 2012

A coaching session that has a proper structure is helpful both to the coachee and to an inexperienced coach. One structural framework in common use is based on the acronym COACH. The COACH model can be used for short, informal coaching sessions as well as more formal coaching. It can also be used as a structure for facilitative or directive coaching, as required. There are of course other structural models available. If you prefer to use another model, the generic structure of this Tool can still be used.

Tool aim
  • To help participants understand the key elements of a coaching session, practise a simple model for coaching based on the acronym COACH and understand the difference between facilitative and directive coaching.
