Identifying standards of performance

To make sure that employees fully understand what is expected of them, their manager will need to have communicated the standards that are required for exemplary performance. When handling performance problems, it is essential that both parties fully understand and have agreed these standards. There are times when a difficulty arises and the manager has one expectation while the employee may have a completely different view of what was expected. Where there is a problem, it will help if the manager can identify the source data where these standards were originally communicated.
