About the Certificate in Employment Relations, Law and Practice

*

In today’s organisations an employee’s sense of trust and fairness is directly influenced by how HR policies and practices are implemented. This can affect their sense of satisfaction, commitment and the state of modern employee relations. Current issues about work-life balance and the war for talent reflect a changing workforce and shifting expectations surrounding the employment relationship.

This qualification will give you a comprehensive introduction to the legal framework that underpins effective HR policies surrounding employment relationships at both individual and collective levels. You will be able to confidently provide advice and guidance to line managers and contribute more effectively to shaping organisational HR policy and practice.

Who is it for?

This qualification is ideal for anyone working as a personnel or employee relations assistant, administrator, adviser or officer. It is also suitable for paralegals working in the employment law field and trade union representatives.

How long does it take to complete?

You are required to complete the certificate within a maximum of two years, although you can complete in a shorter time frame if preferred.

What will I learn?

The CIPD Certificate in Employment Relations, Law and Practice will give you detailed knowledge of the following:

  • the UK and EU legal framework for managing the employment relationship, including the role of government, Acas, CAC, employment tribunals, EAT and how external change and pressures affect your organisation in these areas
  • the business environment and organisational context of employee relations
  • internal and external factors affecting the organisation and employee interface
  • the legislation affecting the setting up of contracts or employment and the importance of using different types of contract
  • the advantages and implications of different types of employment relationships and the contribution of different contractual relationships to organisational success
  • legislation relating to recruitment, selection and appointment, especially: discrimination, equal opportunities, equal pay, asylum, immigration and references
  • how to interpret and recognise implications of legislation and advise on its impact, especially: working time regulations, work life balance – flexible working provision, basic health and safety, data protection and new information and consultation regulations
  • procedures necessary to deal with issues of poor performance, behaviour and capability in order to advise and contribute to performance management through HR best practice
  • dispute resolution procedures and processes relating to grievance, discipline, job and performance grading, trade union recognition and application of agreements
  • dispute resolution processes for collective bargaining, joint consultation and information-giving instructions
  • enhanced negotiating and influencing skills, and the opportunity to practice applying them to relevant employee relations scenarios.

How do I gain the Certificate?

In addition to attending the course modules, you must complete:

  • four assignments: two skills-based and two written
  • a project including a project proposal, written report and oral presentation
  • self-study material
  • a personal development portfolio that demonstrates a satisfactory level of learning and understanding.
