1 Who is the Certificate aimed at?

This Certificate programme is intended for any line manager, project leader or team manager irrespective of functional background or experience. It is, however, essential that participants have responsibility for a team, or can take on the responsibility for a team, for the duration of the programme. Students will include:

  • line, team or project managers new to their role
  • more experienced managers responsible for improving a team’s performance or faced with specific challenges; for example managing a team through a period of change
  • aspiring managers, providing they have the opportunity to take on a team leader role for the duration of the programme.

2 How can I use what I learn back at work?

On completion of the Certificate students will be able to:

  • analyse the key drivers of team performance and make plans to tackle problems and raise performance levels
  • implement plans for change effectively and measure the impact of changes and calculate the business benefits generated
  • use a toolbox of techniques that can be employed and adapted to meet the range of people management issues a line manager may need to address
  • communicate confidently to direct reports and colleagues in a variety of business contexts in ways which help maximise performance
  • manage staff on a day-to-day basis, confident in how to approach problems with individuals and teams and able to maintain motivation levels and focus on the goals and objectives set
  • create the environment necessary for effective working and successful change to be managed and innovation and creativity to be stimulated
  • use the techniques and processes that will help in the selection of new team members in a way that makes a positive contribution to team dynamics and capabilities and which is fully compliant with legislation and company policy
  • identify opportunities for developing the capabilities and competencies of individuals and the team and plan for these to be fully exploited using a variety of learning opportunities and techniques
  • recognise their own personal strengths and weaknesses as a line manager or team leader and learn from their experience whilst planning personal development to improve their own performance
  • measure the impact of their own development on their team’s performance and productivity in terms of retention, absence and grievance metrics as well as output performance measures and staff satisfaction levels.

3 What is the format?

The Certificate uses a blended learning approach to build practical skills on the basis of good practice and underpinning knowledge. The programme is made up of five modules, each consisting of about 50 hours of study, and the programme only requires five face-to-face days, minimising time away from the office or work. Specifically, each of the modules consists of:

  • an intensive 1-day face-to-face workshop
  • collaborative online projects and activities
  • self-managed learning using both hard copy and online resources
  • email and telephone mentoring from a personal tutor
  • a practical work based assignment or project.

4 How long will it take?

The Certificate takes 12 months to complete You have a maximum of 18 months to complete the requirements of the programme.

5 Does the Certificate lead to CIPD membership?

Successful completion of the Certificate leads to associate membership of the CIPD. It is also equivalent to a NOS level 4 qualification.

6 How much does the programme cost?

£3,750.00 + £656.25 VAT

Fees valid for bookings received before 31 December 2007.

Fees include

  • tuition and materials on all five workshops
  • programme materials, including 5 learning guides and a guide to study
  • online self-study and unlimited access to the online Learner Support Site for the duration of the programme
  • regular teleconferences or virtual classrooms
  • open access to a CIPD personal tutor for one-to-one mentoring and support by phone or email
  • assessment of your assignments and integrated project.

Fees do not include travel, accommodation or registration as an Affiliate member of the CIPD, which is mandatory for all candidates who are not already a CIPD member.
