1) Who is the Certificate aimed at?
The CPP provides a solid grounding in all aspects of people management and development. The Certificate is designed for any personnel professionals, including line managers, personnel assistants and clerical staff who want to enhance their practical personnel skills. They are specifically for people who are perhaps moving into a personnel role or for more senior managers who are making the transfer into HR.
2) What will I get out of the Certificate?
The CPP will help to develop practical, relevant skills and give you the confidence and knowledge to work more effectively.
3) How can I use what I learn back at work?
On completion of either of the Certificates you will be able to:
- identify how the personnel function contributes towards organisational goals
- prepare and conduct face-to-face interviews and be confident in other areas vital to effective and efficient recruitment and selection
- arrive at soundly-based selection decisions and identify the key elements of the employment relationship
- plan and carry out a short training session using suitable supporting material and be able to supply basic feedback, assessment and evaluation techniques
- apply the fundamentals of employment law and recognise the practical relevance of your own organisations policies and procedures
- improve the performance of a team and encourage personal development by using an effective performance review process
4) How do I gain the Certificate?
To gain the CPP you must: a) attend the following courses:
- Introductory Workshop (2 days)
- Recruitment and Selection Skills (3 days)
- One-to-one and Small Group Training (2 days)
- An Introduction to Employment Law (1 day)
- Performance Review Skills (2 days)
b) complete five self-study exercises, plus thirteen assessed exercises
c) maintain a continuous professional development (CPD) learning log
d) undertake two written assessed assignments and two skills based assignments
e) undertake an assessed integrated project related to the syllabus and to your area of personnel practice work. This includes submitting a project proposal and then a project written in a report format.
5) How long will it take me?
The modular Certificate programme is designed to be flexible. Completion usually takes a year although it can be completed over a shorter or longer period, up to a maximum of two years, if necessary.
6) What support will I have throughout the Certificate?
Your employer
Wherever possible we encourage you to obtain your employer’s support in the following areas:
- learning objectives
- assignments and case studies
- consolidating learning
Your personal tutor
You will be assigned a personal tutor whilst you are studying for the CPP. The personal tutor’s role is to support and coach you though the programme, including:
- answering any queries you have about the content and structure of the Certificate
- reviewing outline plans of your assessed work
- commenting on draft copies of your written assignments and case studies (we would strongly recommend that you send at least one draft of your written assignments to your personal tutor before submitting it for assessment) and providing feedback on areas of improvement
- providing useful reference points for additional information, if necessary.

7) Does the Certificate lead to CIPD membership?
Whilst studying for the Certificate you are an Affiliate-Studying member of the CIPD. Completion of the Certificate leads to Associate membership of the CIPD. Please note that the registration fee for membership is not included in the Certificate fee. You’ll need to pay a one-off administration fee of £109 and an annual subscription fee based on the time of year you join.
8) What is the cost of the Certificate?
You can either pay the full Certificate fee up-front or pay on a module-by-module basis.
Up-front fees
£3,860.00 + £675.50 VAT
Module-by-module fees
You will be invoiced for the Introductory Workshop (including all Certificate resources), and four modules on an individual basis for the total fee of £4,045.00 + £707.88 VAT. All fees are valid for bookings received before 31 December 2007. Fees include:
- tuition on all face-to-face modules
- course materials including candidate handbook, books and self-study material
- access to a CIPD personal tutor by phone, email and post
- monitoring of the programme by CIPD qualified tutors and moderators
- assessment of assignments and the project.
