Upgrading your membership

Get the recognition you deserve

Upgrading your membership can dramatically strengthen your professional credentials and make sure that your skills and expertise are fully recognised.

Graduate members

You may be eligible for an immediate upgrade to Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD).

Chartered Members (Chartered MCIPD)

You may be eligible for an immediate upgrade to Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD).

Affiliate, Associate and Licentiate members

You cannot upgrade directly to chartered membership. To become a chartered member you'll first need to meet our Practitioner-level Standards in full. You can do this by choosing to study the Professional Development Scheme (PDS) or by having your experience assessed through Professional assessment of competence (PAC).

How to upgrade your membership

Our research tells us that although upgrading to chartered membership is an aspiration for many of our members, it's seen by some as just too time consuming. We want to ensure that you hold the highest level of membership and professional recognition that you can.

To help you do this we've changed our upgrading process to make it as straightforward as possible, without compromising our standards. We've changed the upgrading process in three ways:

  1. Less paperwork
As long as you provide us with the information required on the application form and attach an up-to-date CV, there's no need to submit any other paperwork. But, if you do have job descriptions and organisation charts you can include these.
  2. An alternative to CPD record forms
We've developed a simple set of questions called your Personal Statement. You can use this to reflect on your development over the last year and evaluate your future needs. You can submit your Personal Statement instead of submitting a CPD record and plan. Of course, if you already have a record and plan in whatever format, then we'll be happy to accept it. It's the content of your CPD we're interested in, not how you present it.
  3. Sponsorship made easier
You no longer need to find a CIPD chartered member to sponsor your application. You can seek the support of your manager, or perhaps a client you've worked for, providing they can comment on your professional practice.
