Agency workers

I was wondering how people managed with agency staff, we work in a very cyclical business and at times we need a extra boost from agency staff.  With the announcement today I wondered how everyone felt about agency staff and the future?

Hi Lindsey... and welcome to the Community. Is the announcement to which you refer the one where Ministers have said the proposed legislation would close the loophole that had allowed agency staff to be paid less than permanent employees?

    In reply to Steve Bridger:

CIPD has broadly welcomed the proposals...

“Work can and should be a force for good and these measures will give atypical workers, such as temporary staff and people on zero hours contracts, more rights while recognising the value of such ‘non-standard’ employment contracts to both workers and employers.

We particularly welcome the extension of the right to a clear and comprehensive day-one written statement of rights to all workers and the move to bring forward plans to create a new single labour market enforcement body."

The Government have announced no dates or details.
This looks like an election 'promise' which is likely to be watered down if it ever gets through. If I ran an agency I might start thinking about the future but would do nothing.

We pay our agency staff a very similar rate to the permanent staff but they are rarely with us for longer than a couple of months. It was less of a worry about the legislation which will have minimal impact on us and more about the general consensus on using agency staff to bridge temporary gaps in staffing.

I am not a fan of agencies but they do a useful role unless the employer has the capacity to run some sort of bank Staff arrangement.
I think I see them as a necessary evil.

I think that's how I feel, it would be great to have everyone on the books but the reality is staff levels need to fluctuate with the business.
