Employee notifying employer on their retirement date

Good afternoon,

I have a query regarding an employee who has reached the age of 66 this year. The employer has not approached the employee about retiring. The employee would like to retire at the end of 2018. What are her obligations to the employer, how much notice does she have to give?

Many thanks in advance

  • whatever is in her contract of employment for normal notice. Often 1,2, or 3 months.

Of course the employer can do little if she doesn't but why wouldn't she?

(sorry I missed that this question was from Ireland. The above relates to UK)

Thank you Keith, not sure if there is a huge amount of difference between the UK & ROI relating to this?
