Employee Personas

Hello CIPD community,

Have any of you done any work around creating employee personas? If so, I would be keen to understand how you went about developing these and appreciate if you could share relevant resources that you found particularly helpful & that I could refer to online.

    I think I heard Aviva talking about this on radio 4 women's hour yesterday, or it might have been around types of employee and roles with a view to return to the workplace and hybrid working. Might be worth a google!
  • Hi Premila

    What are employee personas? This sounds interesting!
  • In reply to Elizabeth Divver:

    Ever-pedantic, it's personae, surely?

    And it's an established performing arts / literary term - not sure how or why HR folk are seeking to adopt / hijack it, but they could at least display some originality!
  • Hey Premila,

    I did an Agile HR course 18 months or so ago, and one of the things we covered off was employee personas - I don't use personas a great deal, but I found the overall course super interesting, I'd highly recommend!

  • In reply to David:

    Personae proper, courtesy Mr Eliot's ' Prufrock':

    There will be time, there will be time

    To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;

    There will be time to murder and create,

    And time for all the works and days of hands

    That lift and drop a question on your plate;

    Time for you and time for me,

    And time yet for a hundred indecisions,

    And for a hundred visions and revisions,

    Before the taking of a toast and tea.

    No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
    Am an attendant lord, one that will do
    To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
    Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
    Deferential, glad to be of use,
    Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
    Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
    At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
    Almost, at times, the Fool.
    I grow old ... I grow old ...
    I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
    Shall I part my hair behind?   Do I dare to eat a peach?
    I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
    I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
    I do not think that they will sing to me.
    I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
    Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
    When the wind blows the water white and black.
    We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
    By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
    Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

    Well, at least this thread has increased my HR-speak word power - might come in handy sometime, but not sure when if ever!

  • In reply to David:

    I found that a surprising read. It seems to me to be stereotyping under another name: the 45 - 55 year old woman who uses Facebook to share pictures of her kids and likes order, the IT specialist who lives alone and prefers to communicate remotely. Is this actually a joke?
  • This seems bizarre. Treat everyone as an individual and personalise their “employment experience” by placing them in a theoretical persona grouping and targeting that group...
  • In reply to Maya:

    I've no problem with the notion of segmentation of employee groups to built a limited range of choices in a cafetaria-based total reward approach. As an example in France if a company has a demographic of lots of couples with young children, access to a good medical insurance (to cover what the state dies not cover), is a must. A similar budget could be offered to the respond to the typical needs of the 45+ brigade who are interested in improving their pension opportunity. This "broad-brush" segmentation makes sense - provided it has been discussed with staff to see if it is what they really want. Making blind assumptions based on one-size--fits-all "personas" is a different kettle of fish.
