Whether you’re stuck in your role, looking for a new role, or simply want to excel in your current one, there are several things you can do to ensure you achieve your own personal goals.

Progressing in your role

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to enter or progress through the profession. We've highlighted some of the ways you can progress below.

Self-assess yourself against the professional standards

The CIPD’s new Profession Map outlines the knowledge and behaviour standards expected at each level of membership. Start by self‐assessing where you are now; this will usually highlight areas of development you can focus on. You may want to compare where you currently are with your aspirational level; this will provide you with a longer-term set of development areas.

Create your development journey

Having identified your priority areas of development, you’ll need to work out how you’re going to achieve them. Think about the best way to achieve your goal, and consider whether a learning approach might help you get there. The CIPD provides a range of different learning approaches, any of which could help you to achieve your goal:

Get your experience recognised with CIPD accreditation

CIPD accreditation empowers you to measure, develop and future-proof your performance against our professional framework. This significantly supports your career progression and raises your profile and credibility.

If you don’t have any prior CIPD accreditation but would like your existing experience to be recognised, explore the Experience Assessment route to professional membership.

If you’re an Associate member with a Level 7 CIPD qualification who aspires to become a Chartered Member, you may be eligible to upgrade to Chartered Membership. If you’re hoping to upgrade from Chartered Member to Chartered Fellow, you might be eligible to upgrade to Chartered Fellowship.
