Simon Morris is a firm believer that '...if people trust the leader and the leaders of the organisation they will go that extra mile and you will get that much more out of them'. Here, he shares his thoughts on what it was like to partner with the CIPD for this study.

CIPD: Why did Jewish Care want to be part of the purposeful leadership study?       

Simon Morris: We decided to participate for a couple of reasons.  We’ve done a lot of work on values based leadership, it’s a very important part of the organisation and our staff survey shows us that we’ve got good engagement but it was a good way of testing out some of the thinking and how successful we’ve been and whether there were issues that we could learn from. One of the important things for Jewish Care is that we’re a learning organisation and therefore to participate in a project that helped us learn and develop and improve ourselves was something that we wished to do.

CIPD: How was it to work with the CIPD on this research?

Simon Morris: Working with a credible organisation like CIPD has been helpful. The standard of the research was exceptionally high.   Staff commented on the quality of the people facilitating the interviews.   But its helped the organisation identify areas that we need to work on in terms of developing our staff.  I think there was a high ....the research gave us some good results which confirmed some of our thinking but as always there was learning for us in terms of continually improving the way that we manage people and develop people.

CIPD: What would be your advice to other leaders on how to be purposeful?   
   
Simon Morris: I think be honest, be true to yourself.  I think ...you know, I as a Chief Executive am ‘Simon’ in the office, ‘Simon’ out of the office, be true to yourself and integrity is critically important and I think if people trust the leader and the leaders of the organisation they will go that extra mile and you will get that much more out of them, whether you are in sales, whether you are in care, whether you are in administration, staff will perform that much better and you will be a more successful organisation.
