In common with most other CIPD branches, this part of the CIPD is run by volunteer members for other Branch members. So how are we doing it, and how can you benefit from what is available?

Your membership of this Branch is one of the benefits of your Annual Subscription. How can you make the most of it? First, by attending events and keeping up-to-date as part of your professional development. Second, by networking with your fellow professionals at our events – this could help you to find a way of resolving a problem, help you to recruit a new member of staff, or help you to find your own next new job. Our mission is to help you to develop your career, and our volunteers will be pleased to offer advice on how you can upgrade your CIPD membership.

And you could do more. You could ask one of us to help with your mentoring. You could make suggestions for events and, better still, help to plan and run them. You could offer your help as a mentor to another CIPD Member.

All these things will be interesting and rewarding, and could be added to your CV to help you to develop your career in directions that you find satisfying and rewarding.

Branch Committee members share the view that professional people should have opportunities to keep up to date and to network with their colleagues. And we enjoy learning about topics ranging from ‘Employment Law Updates’ to ‘flipped learning’ and ‘restoring the peace’. Our presenters range from local experts with national reputations to international consultants. Do join us - we look forward to welcoming you to one of our events soon.

John Toplis

Chair, CIPD Essex and Ipswich

The Ron Shepherd Trust was established by local committee members in memory of the dedication and commitment of Ron Shepherd to Training and Education services both at a local and national level.

Ron Sheppard was employed by the Ford Motor Company between 1950 and 1989 and specialised in education and training from the 1960s. Ron held many senior roles within the profession and sat on many academic advisory boards.

The Trust’s aim was to forge a permanent link between the work of the Branch and Educational institutes.

Awards are made annually to two CIPD PDS students from Anglia Ruskin University (ARU, Chelmsford), University Campus Suffolk (UCS, Ipswich) and the University of East London (UEL, Stratford). Although UEL no longer falls within the Essex and Ipswich Branch geographical area, it is still a beneficiary of the Ron Sheppard Trust as it fell within the area covered by the Trust at the time the Trust was formed.

The awards are made in recognition of academic achievement.
