Our branches are run by committees of CIPD members supported by the Branch Development team. Anyone who is a CIPD member can volunteer to help run their local branch, although to prevent the committees from becoming too large in some areas there may be a waitlist to join the committee.

Each branch holds an annual meeting every summer to elect the committee for the next year. Broadly there are three types of roles on a branch committee:

  • Branch officer roles: leadership roles required by our constitution.
  • Accountability roles: committee members with a specific area of responsibility.
  • Branch committee members: those without a specific responsibility but are willing to contribute.

With guidance from CIPD, each branch committee prepares and submits an annual business plan and creates a programme of activities for the membership year.

Hear from our branch volunteers

I wish I had joined sooner. Being a member of the branch committee has given me so much; I have a fantastic growing HR network, I am collaborating more broadly and there are lots of opportunities to get involved and be part of shaping and making change in society happen for better quality work practices.

Trisha Manners, Chartered MCIPD

Tees Valley branch, Public Policy Lead

The best thing for me about joining the branch committee has been the sense of team! It’s been challenging recently for all of us, and the committee served as a lifeline for me during lockdown when I have felt isolated and cut off. It’s that sense of team that really carries me. Also, I love the feeling of making a difference. Our work around Equality, Diversity & Inclusion has been tough for me, but I have been given the tools and support to translate my passion into meaningful and worthwhile events, which feels incredible.

Woosh Raza, Chartered MCIPD

Central London branch, Co-chair

For me, people management is a lifetime career, so I enjoy making sure our portfolio of events and activities supports our members whether they are in the most strategic of roles, somewhere on the ladder or taking their first steps into the profession. Plus, I never leave a branch meeting or one of our events without something new to think about or try.

Karen Sanders

Northamptonshire branch committee member
