The third sector is hugely important in the UK but many small charities do not have a dedicated HR professional and often do not have resources available to use for training. As part of our commitment to championing better work and working lives we believe that CIPD members can play a role in volunteering to support small charities, providing an opportunity for you to give back whilst also developing your own professional skills and experience.

With more than 160,000 registered charities and a collective annual income of £69 billion, the third sector is making massive societal impact in communities across country and internationally. However, we know that skills gaps can be a real problem for small charities – which make up 96 per cent of the third sector.

When it comes to HR, many small charities do not have a dedicated HR professional or team, which means that non-specialist staff, including chief executives or office managers, are often required to implement all aspects of HR for their organisation, covering everything from recruitment to employment law.

We have partnered with Team London since 2015 on their Skill-UP programme, providing small-charity leaders based in London with a free 'Introduction to HR' training session, followed by one-to-one mentoring support delivered by HR volunteers.
