Harriet and her mentor Abigail reflect on how their mentoring helped Harriet to find her confidence and take the next step in her career.

Read Harriet and Abigail reflect on how they both benefitted from the mentoring relationship

Abigail: The most surprising thing about the mentoring programme was the sense of achievement it gave me. Seeing someone grow in confidence and supporting them through the programme is a feeling like no other.

Harriet: When I signed up for the Steps Ahead programme my confidence and self-esteem were quite low and I believed having a mentor would help. My first impression of my mentor was very positive - Abigail was welcoming, reassuring, kind, enthusiastic and empathetic. She was very encouraging throughout my time with her. She believed in me and told me that I was capable of achieving whatever I wanted to achieve. Her good sense of humour was very positive when I was low, she was very encouraging.

Abigail: I learnt that by sharing my own challenges both professional and personal, showed Harriet that it is possible to overcome the obstacles faced and turn these obstacles into something positive and to never give up on your dreams or aspirations. Building Harriet's confidence in her own abilities was one of the first things that we worked on together.

Harriet: Her dedication to building my confidence paid off. Not only did I attain a First Class Honours degree in my studies, I also got myself a job after my first interview. Abigail helped me brush up on my CV, prepared me for interviews - gave me interview tips, and went through some interview questions with me. All this built my confidence. Getting a job that I wanted boosted my confidence even further. I cannot thank Abigail enough.
I would encourage anyone to join Steps Ahead to help build their confidence and self-esteem.

Abigail: To anyone considering Steps Ahead I would say you have nothing to lose by signing up to the programme and will be supported throughout. If you are looking for support or guidance, please do sign up.
