Theresa May’s call for a snap General Election in the UK has taken many people by surprise, with suggestions of political and voter fatigue being widely reported. However, the CIPD is encouraging members and the wider HR profession to use this as an opportunity to make clear the changes they want to see in the world of work. Peter Cheese, CIPD Chief Executive, said that this is the time ‘for our profession to stand up and truly champion better work and working lives’.

Over the coming weeks, the CIPD will be working with its members to ensure the voice of the profession is represented and heard in key debates on: immigration, diversity and inclusion, pay and reward - especially executive pay, modern working practices, and education and skills. These issues have been in the limelight over the last few months, through increased media attention but also greater political debate, and the CIPD is keen to ensure that they stay at the top of the political agenda.

To champion that progress, and build on the principles that are already in place to drive these agendas forward, the CIPD will release a manifesto articulating specific calls for the new Government to adopt.

The CIPD is also committed to providing practical support and guidance to members looking to actively engage with the election, and practitioners seeking stability and reassurance during this period of political and economic uncertainty.
