Over the past few years, as employment in the UK has continued to rise, there has been a shift in the focus of government and policymakers beyond merely the quantity of work in the economy, and now looking more closely at the quality of work. As a consequence, there is a lot of attention now given to ensuring people have access to 'Good Work'. This focus has come from all levels of government – central, devolved and local.

As part of this, CIPD has been proud to work with a number of local authorities on localised employment charters and standards, notably with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority on the Good Employment Charter. CIPD's expertise on the world of work has been recognised by the Mayor and his team, as well as the impact that our members have on driving positive change in the workplace and making 'Good' and 'Fair' Work a reality. We've advised the Mayor and provided our resources to help businesses in the Greater Manchester area to implement the Charter.

Peter Cheese, CEO of CIPD said: "Championing better work and working lives for the benefit of individuals, organisations and society lies at the heart of CIPD's purpose which is why we are delighted to support the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that increasing the availability of good work in the economy is important not just to support people's wellbeing and development but also to boost their productivity."

"We look forward to working with Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to support the promotion and adoption of the standard, highlighting the key CIPD resources available to employers to help them design better jobs and improve the quality of people management and development."

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: "The Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter is about setting a high bar for employment standards while supporting our thriving economy. It’s about enabling businesses to grow and invest in our city-region, and at the same time making sure that our residents develop the skills to succeed in good, secure jobs that pay a real living wage."

"The CIPD has been a valuable partner in the development of the Charter, and their support is a strong endorsement of our shared goal: ensuring that employment and recruitment right across Greater Manchester are underpinned by a commitment to equality, fair pay, and a positive and productive workplace."
