As part of the month-long celebration of LGBT history and identity, the CIPD is asking “who is your LGBT hero?” and encouraging its employees, volunteers and members to share stories about how their LGBT hero has inspired them.

CIPD’s LGBT+ & Friends Co-Chair, Ciprian Arhire said: “We are influenced by the people around us and we each have a role to play in championing diversity and inclusion. This is why we want to showcase the best LGBT champions by asking people to share their inspiring stories about the LGBT heroes important to them. Increasing visibility through these champions will help others to understand LGBT issues and build greater support.”

Heroes selected by the LGBT+ and Friends committee include Gluck the celebrated lesbian artist, the electropop band Pet Shop Boys prominent gay rights activists, Sir Ian McKellen and even Alan Turing. The video below shows the LGBT+ and Friends committee talking about their heroes:

LGBT History Month is celebrated throughout February in the UK. Communities and organisations are encouraged to take part in any way they can to highlight LGBT rights and the challenges that LGBT people face.

CIPD Policy Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Jill Miller said: “There are many ways organisations of any size can support LGBT rights in the workplace: by holding ‘lunch and learn’ sessions, or publicising information such as the excellent content produced by Stonewall. By encouraging open dialogue at work about diversity and inclusion HR professionals and their colleagues can build more supportive and safe environments for all employees to feel able to be themselves and engaged with their work.”

Exploring people and characters, either real or fictional that have contributed significantly to the LGBT culture, equality and rights is our way of identifying LGBT Role Models, igniting the conversation on this topic and celebrating LGBT History Month for this year. So tell us who your #LGBThero is and why on social media or by reaching out to us.
