One of the most distinguished voices on people management, Cooper is world-renowned for his ground-breaking research and insights into health and well-being in the workplace. He is 50th Anniversary Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester and the author of over 120 books on subjects including occupational stress, women at work, and industrial and organisational psychology.
His election as the new CIPD President took place at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on 15 December 2015. The Board nominated Sir Cary for the role, which is the most senior non-executive role within the CIPD, to support the CIPD on its mission to champion better work and working lives by promoting the importance of good people management and development.
Cooper has had a number of connections with the CIPD over the years on matters relating to the well-being agenda and creating better workplaces. Most recently, in November 2015, he opened the CIPD’s Annual Conference with a keynote on mental capital and well-being at work.

Cooper’s role as president has an initial tenure of three years and he succeeds Gill Rider who has held the role since December 2010. The CIPD is immensely grateful for Gill’s distinguished presidency during the last five years, and the significant contribution she has made through her work on the Board and particularly in supporting the Institute during the time of former CIPD CEO Jackie Orme's illness and in bringing on board a new CEO in Peter Cheese.
